—Hammond Model 1 Type Writer of 1884 on Original Cast Iron Table. Sold!

Probably one of the best looking antique typewriters ever made. This historic Hammond Type Writer was called just that, “Type Writer”, and not typewriter. Typewriter was not a word yet in 1884 when Hammond manufactured his first typewriters.
Like early sewing machines, Hammond and other manufacturers of typewriter would sell attractive tables with cast iron legs to go with the machine. These tables would show the name of the machine.
Hammond was a very successful brand and hundreds of thousands of machines were manufactured. The original Hammond Typewriter Company effectively ceased its operations in the mid-1920’s following the death of its eccentric founder, James Bartlett Hammond, in 1913. Following his death and a brief period of operation out of a trust, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (which was granted the company rights) sold the patents to the Frederick Hepburn Company in 1926. That company was renamed Varityper Incorporated in 1927, bringing an end to the original Hammond brand. The Varityper company subsequently went bankrupt in 1933. read more>>
